The cobaltirc webchat can be easily added to your website as either an external link or an embedded IFRAME.

Using this mechanism it's very easy to direct your users to your chat channel(s). They never even have to know what IRC is, in fact.

You can construct URLs directing users to your specific channel(s) using the ?channels query string parameter, as follows:

Our IRCD (IRC daemon) is a lightly hacked version of oftc-hybrid, which is itself a modified version of ircd-hybrid7.

ircd-hybrid7 is an extremely robust production-class ircd designed for EFNet.

OFTC's patchset combined with our changes make ircd-hybrid much more appropriate for smaller networks.

About

Circe is an IRC services suite written in Perl using POE, Moose, and a hacked-up POE::Component::Server::IRC.

It is designed specifically for oftc-hybrid/bc6 and went live on cobaltirc on November 2nd, 2011.

It is event-driven and very responsive.

Under stress testing, Circe has been able to keep up rather well with 500+ concurrent user requests (randomized from lists of services commands).

Web-based IRC gateways generally proxy connections to the IRC server. Thus, the hostmask seen in WHO/WHOIS is not necessarily the client's actual originating host, but rather the address of the web IRC gateway. This presents a challenge when attempting to place effective ban masks.
